      Hi DearbhlaB,

My professional – electronics education starter at 15 years of age. This was in Poland – the education system is different in Poland. I attended 8 years of primary school from age of about 7 till 15. You learn physics, chemistry, biology, practical technical work – something like mix of art and tehcnology in the secondary school in Ireland, art, music, mathematics, Polish language, history and geography. All of the above are separate subjects.
At age 15 you choose your school – a bit like choosing the secondary school in Ireland, although we have different types of schools to choose from – something so called liceum is for 4 years and is more general school, although it can be profiled (mathematics-physics or more liberal arts curriculum – art/history/languages) or technical secondary school where you attend for 5 years but graduate with a professional title of Technician. I chose to go the technical college where I learned lots of mathematics, physics and professional subjects such as electronics, metrology – science about measuring things, TV transmission and practical things how to build and fix electronic circuits and devices.
After that I studied for 4 years radio-electronics to get my Bachelor of Engineering – high frequency electronics – lots of physics, mathematics and professional subjects plus a time on the board of tall ship as a crew member as this was maritime college – I was meant to be a radio-officer and work on the big merchant ships.
After that I did my PhD for about 6 years. This was PhD through research – it means that you work on your project and you meant to come up with something innovative to show that you can work as an independent researcher and thinker (and doer!). So there you have it about 15 years of science oriented education but I actively learn almost everyday!
